A bar and a ducat can be two ways of buying physical gold. Start by comparing how much fine gold you receive and what you pay for it. Then choose the shape, design and packaging to suit your purpose: storage, a gift or a future sale.
Compare the same quantity of fine gold
A product’s total weight and fine gold weight are not always the same. Fineness tells you what proportion of the alloy is gold. The price of one gram of a bar therefore cannot be compared directly with the price of one gram of a lower-fineness alloy.
For example, the Austrian Mint specifies a fineness of 986/1000, a total weight of 3.49 g and a fine gold weight of 3.44 g for its single ducat. When comparing prices, use the declared 3.44 g of gold rather than the coin’s total weight. Current issues are restrikes of a historical design bearing the date 1915; that date alone does not mean an individual coin is over a century old. The manufacturer’s specification is the starting point for this example.
Shape and purpose
Bars have a straightforward format and a choice of weights, making it easier to plan a specific quantity of gold. Ducats and other gold coins have recognisable designs, so appearance may matter when choosing a gift. Neither format is automatically the best choice for every buyer.
| Question | What to consider |
|---|---|
| How much gold am I buying? | The individual product’s fine gold weight and fineness. |
| What am I paying? | The total price and price per gram of fine gold, at the same point in time. |
| Is it a gift? | The design, format and stated packaging. |
| What if I sell only part of my holding? | The number of separate pieces and future buyback terms. |
Packaging and documentation
Packaging depends on the manufacturer and product. Do not expect every gold coin to have a serial number or the same type of manufacturer’s certificate as a bar in a blister pack. Read the exact description and keep the invoice and accompanying documentation. The absence of a blister pack on a product normally supplied without one is not, by itself, evidence of an authenticity problem.
Consider a future sale too
Before choosing, compare current offers and ask about the terms on which the product could later be bought back. Selling and buyback prices serve different purposes. Do not assume that a design, gift box or higher purchase premium will be valued equally at buyback.
For a practical comparison, explore the range of bars and ducats. If you are choosing between one larger piece and several smaller ones, continue to choosing a gold weight.
